The Louvre is at the heart of Arrondissement 1 at the very heart of Paris. For visitors to Paris the area is a natural transport hub which they will pass through several times during their visit - wherever their accommodation.

Metro Line 1 cuts through the district, East to West. This connects the main transport hubs at Chatelet and Gare du Lyon to the Louvre, Palais Royal, Arc de Triomphe and the Champs Elysees. From Chatelet RER trains run to both CDG and Orly airports.
The Roissy Bus to CDG airport terminates at Opera, about 1 km from the Louvre.

RER Trains (including direct links to airports)
RER line B runs from CDG airport to the centre, the fastest public transfer. Get off at Chatelet and interchange with Metro Line 1 that runs through the centre of Arrondissement 1

The RER lines are integrated with the Metro lines, ticketing is seamless.
Paris RER Train Map
Note the interchange between the RER platform and Metro Line 1 at Chatelet is a very, very, very long walk despite the availability of moving walkways.
The RER also runs out to Orly airport, with a short connection onto the airport link.

Running along the left bank of the River Seine is Line C of the RER. This runs out to Versailles making an independent visit very straight forward. Just cross the river to either St Michel, Musee d'Orsay or Invalides RER stations.

From Invalides, Air France run a bus service to Orly airport.

Paris RER Train
The RER is run by RATP, who also run the Metro and city centre buses.

As a result train, metro and bus are tightly integrated, sharing ticketing systems. If you are travelling within central Paris you can use a single ticket which is also valid for Metro and buses.
More details about RER trains

Another option from CDG airport is to get the Roissy Bus that terminates just north of The Louvre area, adjacent to Opera.

The bus starts in front of the American Express building just west of the Opera Garnier and at the airport from Terminals 1 & 2 where it is well signposted.
Journey time is scheduled at 45 to 60 minutes. During the weekday rush hours the motorway out to the airport can resemble a parking lot and journeys of up to two hours have been known.

Fare
: 8.90 Euro
(You can use all RATP travel passes on the Roissy Bus, including the Paris Visite Card, as long as they are valid for zones 1-5)

Paris Metro
For most people the Paris Metro is the transport of choice travelling around Paris. Details of ticketing, lines etc. are on our Paris Metro page.

Metro Line 1 runs east - west along the north bank of the central area of the River Seine. West of The Louvre is follows the Champs Elysees right out to La Defense via the Arc de Triomphe. There are interconnections with all the other lines running north-south.
Metro Line 1 is convenient for most of the Paris icons apart from the Eiffel Tower along its route.
Line 7 also runs noth-south through Arrondissement 1 connecting the Louvre with Opera and the other way the unspoilt, less commercialised parts of the Latin Quarter.

Local Bus

Although not as fast as the Metro, bus allows you to see more and there are plenty of bus lanes in Paris to expedite your journey. The area around Palais Royal / Louvre / Pont Neuf is a major bus hub. Routes radiate out in all directions to most places visitors want to go.
There is also a night bus service that has its hub in the east of the district at Chatelet & Hotel de Ville.
