The
second largest park on the Left Bank of the Seine, the garden was
founded by Louis XIII in 1626. It contains a maze, small zoo and a
natural science museum.
The gardens are free to walk through. Near the north end the gardens
are laid out in a formal, flat pattern. There are several very large
tropical greenhouses in the area.
On the eastern side near the Gare d'Austerlitz station is the Natural
History museum. There is of course a charge to enter here, but after
being closed for 30 years it has reopened with all the latest interactive
displays.
At the south-western corner, the park changes character again with
great variations in altitude and heavy vegetation and trees.
On the south-east border is a mosque which has made its name through
the opening of a tea room. |
