St
Lazare Station is like many major European railway stations. A fine
old architecturally interesting station with a slightly grubby immediate
environment with lots of cheap hotels and snack and fast food outlets.
St Lazare is better than most, and going south you almost immediately
come into the smart shops and department stores along Boulevard
Haussmann.
However, of the area in question St Lazare sits in the extreme south
west corner. Much of this district is inner city residential. Here
you will find arguably the 'real' Paris where everyday life ambles
along.
Through this residential area a few bus routes run from the Montmartre
/ Clichy area down into the city centre, supplemented by Metro lines
