The
Luxembourg Palace and Gardens is a very large green getaway, a great
place to have a break from sightseeing and to take a baguette. The
palace itself is not open, though there are often exhibitions and
art shows within the outbuildings. The gardens are vast, the focus
for visitors being the lake in front of the palace. There is a nice
cafe with seating outside under the trees as well as inside.
Its the kind of place you find kids sailing their model boats and
just being kids, there is also a puppet theatre.
A nice place to just sit down and contemplate, people watch and
reflect on your visit so far.
The main road arteries in the district are the Boulevard Michel
that runs north - south down the side of the Luxembourg Gardens.
The RER railway runs along this road (underground). The Boulevard
Saint Germain runs east - west parallel to the Seine, a few hundred
metres inland. The
Boulevard Saint Germain is lined with high class shops and restaurants.
South
and East of the Pantheon things are a lot less hectic and a fascinating
area just to wander. Rue Mouffetard is one of Paris's oldest and
liveliest neighbourhoods. These days the area has many restaurants,
shops, and cafés, and a regular open market. Place del La
Contrescarpe is another delightful place to make a pit stop on your
wanderings.
