The Latin Quarter of Paris is an area in the 5th arrondissement and parts of the 6th arrondissement of Paris on the left bank (south side) of the Seine, around the Sorbonne University.

For the purposes of this guide we focus just on the 5th arrondissement, St Germain (the 6th arrondissement) is dealt with on separate pages.

The area is well known for its lively atmosphere and many restaurants and bars in the area around the Sorbonne and opposite Notre Dame by the river.

Elsewhere south and east of this tourist honeypot the 'authentic' Latin Quarter of markets, neighbourhood shops and an 'uncommercial feel' is in stark contrast.

At the eastern end of Arrondissement 5 is the Jardin Des Plantes. Apart from the plants and gardens there are animals along the northern border and museums like the natural history museum. In the north west of the Jardin the park area has great changes of elevation, a big contrast with the formal gardens elsewhere.

Just north of the Jardin is the main Paris University campus. The river bus service has its eastern terminus at the Jardin Des Plantes, with frequent schedules as far west as the Eiffel Tower.

The historic University of Paris is made up of 13 colleges which includes the famous Sorbonne sites. There is quite tight security on the famous Sorbonne Colleges around Pantheon and Cluny.
The Pantheon just south of the Sorbonne is modelled on the Pantheon in Rome, an imposing building which looks as if indeed it has been transplanted from Rome. It was completed at the start of the French Revolution, the new Revolutionary government ordered it to be changed from a church to a mausoleum for the interment of great Frenchmen. Twice since then it has reverted to being a church, only to become again a temple to the great intellectuals of France.
Behind the Pantheon (east of it) is the impressive Saint Etienne Du Mont Church

The Musée de Cluny, officially known as Musée National is at the heart of this north western sector most visitors frequent. This museum houses artefacts dating to the Middle Ages. It is renowned for its tapestry collection, other notable works stored include Gothic sculptures from the 7th and 8th centuries. There are also works of gold, ivory, antique furnishings, and illuminated manuscripts.

The Luxembourg Palace and Gardens is a very large green getaway, a great place to have a break from sightseeing and to take a baguette. The palace itself is not open, though there are often exhibitions and art shows within the outbuildings. The gardens are vast, the focus for visitors being the lake in front of the palace. There is a nice cafe with seating outside under the trees as well as inside.
Its the kind of place you find kids sailing their model boats and just being kids, there is also a puppet theatre.
A nice place to just sit down and contemplate, people watch and reflect on your visit so far.

The main road arteries in the district are the Boulevard Michel that runs north - south down the side of the Luxembourg Gardens. The RER railway runs along this road (underground). The Boulevard Saint Germain runs east - west parallel to the Seine, a few hundred metres inland.
The Boulevard Saint Germain is lined with high class shops and restaurants.

South and East of the Pantheon things are a lot less hectic and a fascinating area just to wander. Rue Mouffetard is one of Paris's oldest and liveliest neighbourhoods. These days the area has many restaurants, shops, and cafés, and a regular open market. Place del La Contrescarpe is another delightful place to make a pit stop on your wanderings.

Accommodation is not as expensive in this area than in the Cluny, Saint Germain area. There are several good, simple accommodation options near Metro stations here.

We also cover the big cluster of hotels in the Cluny / Pantheon area on our Latin Quarter hotels page. This particular area as an accommodation district can be twinned with St Germain hotels.
