| The
Haussmann Renovations, or Haussmannization of Paris was a work led
under the initiative of Napoléon III and Haussmann, from 1852
to 1870. The Boulevard Haussmann which runs along the southern border
of Arrondissement 9 and the Rue La Fayette guaranteed better access
to the Opera neighbourhood from the outside districts. |
If
you launch the hotel map of Arrondissement 9 (right) you will clearly
see how the Rue de Fayette bisects the district.
Running all along the Rue de Fayette is Metro line 9, the main metro
stations in the district being Le Peletier, Cadet and Poissonniere.
Unfortunately this line veers off just before Gare Du Nord to Gare
de l'Est with a tedious short transfer to Gare du Nord, one of the
main transport hubs in Paris.

| This
line will also take you very quickly direct to Opera, Louvre and Pont
Neuf (for Notre Dame) before going over the Seine to some of the nicer
unspoilt parts of the Latin Quarter. |
|
From
Gare Du Nord the Rue La Fayette slopes gradually downhill past Poissonierre
Metro to Cadet.
Broadly speaking the further west and southwards you go, the more
upmarket and expensive things become.
Around Cadet is a big cluster of hotels, some quite grand, but most
mid market hotels offering good value. The Folies Bergere is just
the back of Cadet.
South of Cadet hotels are found as far as Boulevard Haussman, the
southern border of Arrondissement 9.
This area retains a local flavour, with a local community going
about their business.
Shops and services tend to be small and personalised. Some parts
can be a bit scruffy, others are very chic.

It
is in this area that you will find a lot of 2 and 3 star hotels offering
great value. We have a page of hotels
around Cadet / Grands Boulevards that fall into this category.
If you are on a very tight budget and want very cheap accommodation,
we'd suggest you look at the neighbouring arrondissement 10, around
the Gare du Nord. Its not a fashionable place to stay, but the Gare
du Nord hotels in the immediate vicinity of Gare du Nord offer
cheap rooms and excellent value, as do the cluster of restaurants
and bars here. For most people arriving at CDG airport or Eurostar
the Gare du Nord is also the ultimate in ease of transfer.
The old shopping indoor shopping galleries, once the height of fashion
a hundred years or so ago have become a tourist attraction in their
own right. Some of the most visited and interesting ones are at the
heart of arrondissement 9.
By Passage Jouffroy is the Musee Grevin, a wax museum constantly updated
with new figures annually. Like Madame Tussauds in London there are
sound effects and some animation to justify the acclaim.
We have a self
guided walk that takes you through a succession of galleries,
all with their own character. The walk ends or starts at the Palais
Royal opposite The Louvre and brings you into the heart of arrondissement
9 in the Cadet area. |
