The Eiffel Tower is on the left bank of Paris city centre on the southern bank of the River Seine. To the east of the Eiffel Tower is Arrondissement 7, a main tourist area. To the west of the Eiffel Tower Arrondissement 15 is local in flavour, a major residential area.

Running along river's left bank, east-west is the RER railway, whilst several Metro lines criss cross the district.

Paris Metro
For most people the Paris Metro is the transport of choice travelling around Paris. Details of ticketing, lines etc. are on our Paris Metro page.

In Arrondissement 7 to the East of the Eiffel Tower lines 8 & 13 cross the river providing direct access to much of the city centre. In Arrondissement 15 to the West of the Eiffel Tower lines 6, 8 & 10 radiate out in all directions to most parts of Paris.
RER Trains (including links to airports)
RER line C runs along the river bank of the Seine. This line gives direct access to Versailles.
By changing at St Michel, by Notre Dame and opposite the Louvre, Line B gives access to both Paris airports and the Gare du Nord.
Paris RER Train Map
The RER is run by RATP, who also run the Metro and city centre buses.

As a result train, metro and bus are tightly integrated, sharing ticketing systems. RER line B serves both CDG and Orly airports, changing at St Michel to Line C gives direct access to the Eiffel Tower district.

If you are travelling within central Paris you can use a single ticket which is also valid for Metro and buses.

Air France Airport Bus Services
Air France operates a direct bus service from Charles De Gaulle to the Arc de Triomphe also stopping at Porte Maillot at the west end of the Champs Elysees. From the Arc de Triomphe, Metro Line 6 goes direct to the Eiffel Tower district, or it is a short taxi ride

If you are travelling at peak hours during the week delays through congestion on the motorway can be extensive and its probably best to take the RER train alternative.

Air France also run another bus service to Orly Airport that terminates outside Invalides RER/Metro station in the heart of Arrondissement 7.
Like the CDG service, severe delays can happen at peak times through traffic congestion.

Local Bus

Although not as fast as the Metro, bus allows you to see more and there are plenty of bus lanes in Paris to expedite your journey.

Particularly useful are the routes 42, 69 & 87. All three run across the Champ de Mars itself where the Eiffel Tower is sited, the 69 & 87 terminating there. The 42 connects with the Champs Elysees, Opera and Gare du Nord. The 87 goes to St Germain and the Latin Quarter before crossing the river to Bastille. The 69 goes direct to the Louvre and Chatelet before also going out to Bastille.
