The key such stations are the largest at Gare Du Nord (including its close neighbour at Gare de L'Est), Gare de Leon, Montparnasse and Saint Lazare.
All of these are very similar with the streets immediately surrounding the stations crammed full of small independent and cheap hotels whose keen competition with each other drives down prices.
Other major advantages of staying around the main Paris stations is that they are all major local public transport hubs. As well as a choice of metro lines, local buses radiate out in all directions.
You will also find that restaurants and food outlets are no-nonsense value outlets, again with competitive pricing. If you are shaky with your French, staff around these are invariably very comfortable talking to you in English.

Logistically Gare Du Nord and Gare de Leon are outstanding. As well as having international and TGV french services they have very good links with both major airports Charles de Gaulle and Orly.
The most reliable and cost effective means of traveling to the airports are the RER Line B trains. Gare du Nord is a station on Line B. Gare de Lyon is one stop away from Chatelet on Line A of the RER. There is a seamless change of train at Chatelet from the same platform between Line A and Line B trains.
Line A of the RER also goes out to Disneyland and there are direct Air France buses to Charles de Gaulle Airport from Gare de Lyon.
Saint Lazare station is very central, you walk out to the main shopping area in Central Paris with all the large department stores.
