Cheap Paris Budget Hotel Chain ETAP |
Cheap Paris hotels are relative of course, Paris is an expensive city. However by planning and taking some time to do some research you can bring the cost of your Paris accommodation dramatically down.
Most of the cheapest hotels in Paris are outside the centre, but the excellent Paris Metro system means this is just a small inconvenience, well worth the cash savings you are making.

The cheapest room rates currently are often the fast expanding French budget hotel chains, Formule 1 and ETAP owned by the same company Accor.
Formule 1 are the lowest priced chain, basically because there rooms are not en suite. Both chains are invariably in large, modern blocks that although perhaps the not most architecturally pleasing offer modern, basic accommodation backed by the reassurance of a multinational global hotel chain.
You won't find these hotels conveniently across the road from the Louvre or Eiffel Tower though, prices are low partly because they occupy sites that require a 15-20 minute Metro ride. At the moment most ETAP and Formule 1 hotels in Paris are very close to the inner orbital road around Paris.

Accor also own the Ibis chain which are perhaps the most widespread budget chain in Paris. At Ibis you'll get a slightly larger room, though still small, and locations are available much more centrally and around the main transport hubs in Paris.
The independent sector also offers literally hundreds of small 2 star properties in every part of Paris. In terms of price, lowest prices tend to be where there is most competition.
In Paris this means the largest railway stations at Gare Du Nord (including its close neighbour at Gare de L'Est), Gare de Lyon, Montparnasse and Saint Lazare.
As always prices are driven by the demand at the time you want to visit. Remember, Paris is primarily a business destination. In the pure business districts like La Defense, real bargains area available at the weekend and holidays, while quite the reverse effect applies around the main tourist/leisure areas.
August is just about the cheapest month to visit Paris as the locals take their annual holidays and go off to the beaches. At this time hotels everywhere will have their lowest rates.
